Around the hall

Putting tents up in the hall is great.

When they're wet and you've just got back from a camp they dry nicely inside, and before the camp it's good practice to get them up quickly (this one took 15 minutes).

The easy thing about putting them up inside is that the wind doesn't blow them around.

The hard thing is putting the pegs in!

ANZAC centenary march 2015

The combined 1st and 4th Kew Joeys, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers turned out on a showery Sunday to mark the centenary of the first ANZAC day.

In 1934 Mustafa Kemal, the Commander of the Turkish forces at Gallipoli in 1915, wrote a tribute to the Anzacs killed at Gallipoli:

Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives ... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours ... You, the mothers who sent their sons from faraway countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.

Mustafa Kemal later became the first President of the Republic of Turkey, and was known as Atatürk, or Father of the Turks.

This inscription appears on the Kemal Atatürk Memorial, Anzac Parade, Canberra.

Stradbroke 2015

The Easter camp went very well with the scouts getting silver award - only 5 points off gold. Something to work on next time. They also got that all-important four consecutive nights under canvas for AJ2016.

This is Lucera, Jean, Sam, Jack and Jono.

We had great weather for most of the camp with rain arriving on the last night.

Also thank you to Jelly for visiting. Euan says it gave the scouts a nice leader for a brief time.

Bay Jam 2015

This was day 4 of 7 and the kids were still going strong. In true scout style they were self governing on nearly every aspect including sleep times and showers!

They thrived at this camp and all have now achieved pioneer badge!

Here are (left to right) Genna, Ryan, Noah, Jack and Sam, along with Little Jack the stick insect.

Elliott Lodge weekend (28-29 April 2014)

Some of the scouts (outnumbered by leaders) had a bludge weekend at Elliott Lodge in Healesville.  Part of the deal was that the scouts chop a pile of firewood while they were there.  The scouts not only loved chopping the wood, but as David says, it's a "healthy productive equivalent to a punching bag for teenagers".  They were all pretty tired out by evening, and there's a good pile of firewood there for other campers.

Kangaree (Joeys' annual get-together)

This is Joe (a good name for a Joey) from Deepdene at Kangaree 2012.

Joeys are for kids of 6-7 years of age.

The ugly blue rubbish bin

I wanted to take a photo of the scout hall, but I didn't like the blue rubbish bin.

Click on the photo to see what I did.

Treetops Camp (April 2012)

Treetops camp is in Riddells Creek, and in 2012 the Stradbroke Cup was held there.

We didn't win, but we wowed the judges with our hand made Hills Hoist!

Can you spot what's wrong with this picture?

Yes, Eric's blown a headlight.

Showtime 2013

In 2013, Camberwell Showtime was held at Kew High School. Because 4th Kew was the closest scout hall to the school we volunteered to feed the whole cast and crew between the matinee and the evening performance.

Everybody pitched in, and we had baked potatoes with all the trimmings. The scouts loved them, especially being able to choose what went on (and how much). Nobody went hungry that evening!
